During our commercial crack sealing process, we use high-powered blowers and a Crack Jet heat lance to clean, dry, and remove any vegetation and debris from the crack to optimize adhesion between rubber and pavement. Where recommended, we will use a machine cutter to rout along the cracks to make more room between the pavement and rubber. This allows the rubber to fill the crack completely and prevents water from entering. The rubber is heated to 400°F and remains pliable, even after it has fully cured, allowing the asphalt to expand and contract during freeze and thaw cycles. Black silica sand is then immediately applied to the cracks to prevent any tracking while the rubber cures. The new asphalt is raked and tamped to finalize the repair. Infrared Repair An infrared repair is a seamless repair that recycles the existing asphalt and requires little or no new material. This method of repair uses radiated heat, much like a toaster, to bring the asphalt up to a working temperature of about 350 degrees. Once the asphalt has been heated, we rake out the bad aggregate, use an asphalt rejuvenator to replenish the oils lost from oxidation and then add some extra hot mix. To complete the repair, we re-compact the area for a seamless repair. The infrared process is faster and quieter than most asphalt repair methods, and is less disruptive to customer operating hours. Reclamation Reclamation is typically used when the pavement is so severely damaged that temporary repairs no longer make financial sense. During the reclamation process we grind down the existing asphalt to a depth of 10 - 12 inches. We use the ground asphalt as a new base material for the foundation, ensuring proper grade and slope, and compact it to a minimum base depth of 8 inches. After making sure the elevation is set for the new asphalt, we then pave over the new surface.
